TRADITIONAL STAGE LAYOUTCURTAIN STYLES

▸ TRAVELER CURTAIN A Traveler Curtain is a bi-parting style curtain that overlaps in the center and moves stage left and stage right, usually stacking off stage behind the proscenium arch.

▸ TAB CURTAIN A Tab Curtain is made in two overlapping panels that lift diagonally creating two beautiful swags that act as a decorative valance when the curtain is in its open position.

▸ AUSTRIAN CURTAIN An Austrian Curtain, also known as a Waterfall or Festoon curtain, is a very ornate and beautiful. It is sewn with both horizontal and ver- tical fullness to create vertical panels of swags that lift up evenly via motorized lift lines.

▸ GUILLOTINE CURTAIN A Guillotine Curtain lifts directly up above the stage. It can be sewn as one large curtain or made in two smaller overlapping panels.

▸ CONTOUR CURTAIN A Contour Curtain has individually operated lift lines that allow inde- pendent movement of each panel. This type of curtain has horizontal fullness, but may or may not have vertical fullness. The look is remi- niscent of old Hollywood movie palaces.

Main Curtain - Also known as the House Curtain, this curtain is typically made from an FR or IFR velour and operate in a number of ways illustrated on p.12. Legs - Used to visually hide the off stage areas of the stage and are typically made from FR or IFR velour. Alternatively, Commando Cloth can be used as an economic option. Borders - Used to visually hide lighting pipes and tops of other drapery/scenic pipes and are typically made from FR or IFR velour. Alternatively, Commando Cloth can be used as an economic option.

Traveler Curtain -This type of curtain proves very useful on stage in both the mid-stage and up-stage positions. In the mid-stage position, it allows the stage depth to be reduced as well as allow scene changes to happen up-stage of it. The up-stage traveler allows for a black surround as well as visually hide a cyclorama or screen. I is typically made from FR or IFR velour. Alternatively, Commando Cloth can be used as an economic option. Cyclorama - Also known as a "Cyc". It is an upstage drapery typically made from FR or IFR seamless muslin or Leno filled scrim that provides a large canvas ready for lighting effects.

A BASIC GUIDE TO STAGE DRAPERY There are many moving parts to the modern stage, among them are various types of theatrical drapery, backdrops, scrim and projection screens. The above diagram is a representational illustration of common soft good names and playing positions on stage.
