100 000 tonnes CO2 equivalent avoided by capturing methane.

a waste disposal and recovery centre in Meknès is helping to cut greenhouse gas emissions

At the request of the Meknès city authorities, SUEZ has rehabilitated its household waste storage centre and built an innovative disposal and recovery centre, whose sustainable development objectives have been set by the Moroccan authorities.

The new site, which measures 56 hectares and can process between 200,000 and 330,000 tonnes of household and similar waste per year, came on line in September 2016. It contributes to the reduction of the region s greenhouse gas emissions using two methods:

capturing biomethane. As well as reducing the site s CO2 emissions, the captured biomethane can also be reused: treatment of landfill leachates using the EVALIXTM process, production of electricity and heat to fuel the ovens in the nearby brick factories, etc.

sorting and recycling materials to avoid the production of virgin materials.

using the green and organic waste to produce compost, which can replace mineral fertilisers on farmland.
