Thanks to the annual production of more than 1.6 million m3 of biogas, annual emissions of

6,000 teq CO2e will be avoided.

reinjecting biomethane from treatment plants

A promising opportunity for the energy recovery of wastewater has emerged following the regulatory authorisation, in France, to inject the biogas produced in wastewater treatment plants into the main natural gas distribution networks.

The authorisation resulted in the launch of the Biovalsan project by Strasbourg Eurométropole. Since 2015, the biogas produced by the city s treatment plant has been transformed into biomethane, purified and then reinjected into the natural gas distribution network, supplying 5,000 households.

This innovative process uses the city s own wastewater as an energy resource for the city.
