At the heart of the Haut Giffre Valley, Samoëns has been
able to retain the soul of an authentic mountain village
The story really starts in 1438! That year, the Duke Amédée VIII granted the village ownership
of several surrounding mountain ranges. The name Samoëns which means “the 7 mountains”
assumes its full meaning and its inhabitants, the Septimontains, celebrated their victory by
planting a Great Lime Tree that today celebrates… 572 years of age!
In 1659, the Confrérie des Quatre Couronnés (the brotherhood of the four crowns) which
unites stonemasons and carvers - the Frahans. From that March onwards, they exported their
savoir-faire and were involved in all the major construction projects abroad. Their wealth was
such that in the 18th century they bought their 7 mountains from an obscure marquis... 1860,
every summer saw the arrival of a small colony of British aristocrats, led by Sir Alfred Wills, an
English barrister, a passionate enthusiast of the Alps and founder of the English Alpine Club.
Another legendary Samoëns figure was Marie-Louise Jaÿ. A native of the area, she moved
to Paris at an early age and founded... the Samaritaine. She became a millionnairess and
presented the village of her birth with an alpine botanical garden, the extraordinary Jaÿsinia,
more topical than ever today.
At the dawn of the 80’s, Samoëns was linked, via Flaine and les Carroz,
to the world of skiing, thus giving birth to the le Grand Massif,

centres, and golf courses at altitude or facing Mont-Blanc, acrobatic courses through the
trees... See it from the sky by para-glider or hang-glider and on or under the ground, with
a mountaineering or pot-holing guide...

With rapid and direct access courtesy of the nearby Ski Bus, the Grand Massif offers a boundless playground from mid-December to mid-April.
With its 265 km of pistes and 5 linked resorts - Morillon, Samoëns, Les Carroz, Sixt Fer à Cheval and Flaine – it is considered one of the finest and largest ski areas in France. For a long time it was
the training ground of Antoine Dénériaz, a native of Morillon and Olympic downhill champion at the Turin Olympic Games on 12 February 2006.
Because of its geographical situation, the Grand Massif benefits from abundant and regular snow coverage throughout the season. It is especially renowned for the quality of its spring snow. The
varied and multi-faceted Grand Massif has an area suited to everyone’s individual expectations. Are you an advanced skier or a thrill seeker? Have a look at the combe de Gers with its 800 m drop
in virgin snow or the piste des Cascades and its 14 km, from the summit of Flaine to Sixt Fer à Cheval... A novice looking for somewhere romantic? Try the Marvel piste running for 5 km through the
