500 years ago : the first great exploratory expeditions

The 16th century was the time of the great explorers. And if there had been more of the world, they would have reached it. This was how the great Portuguese poet Camões described the bravery of Vasco de Gama, who opened the shipping route to India, or Magellan and Elcano, who were the first to circumnavigate2 the world. The Renaissance and the period of great discoveries represented a major breakthrough: Man knows more about his environment and becomes aware that most of the Earth is covered by water.

Since that time, the oceans have always attracted the curiosity of explorers, even if it does not always appear to be the case. In the middle of the space race in the 1960s, the author John Steinbeck wrote about these three fifths of the earth that are neglected by human beings, who are fearful, ignorant and uncouth when faced with the oceans. Terra (or rather mare) incognita, our oceans? 500 years after Vasco de Gama, the will to explore the oceans still exists. And it is an interest that appears to be on the increase, as we become aware of the prominent role that the oceans will play in our future, and of the need to protect them.
