fuelling the cement industry with sustainable energy sources SUEZ inaugurated the Solid Recovered Fuels (SRF) facility 1 in Rugby, England, in 2015. It offers a sustainable alternative to fossil fuels for the CEMEX cement works 2 located in the same town, which has the biggest cement kiln in the UK. The site produces a SRF called Climafuel™, that is dry and clean, and can be used as a replacement for coal. It is made from local refuse household or industrial waste that cannot be recycled until then and which would otherwise go to storage centre.

One and a half tonnes of Climafuel produces the same quantity of energy as one tonne of coal. Using this energy offers a number of advantages. It is sustainable, transportable, abundantly available and affordable, and it is a fine example of the circular economy in action.
