MainStream est un projet lancé à l initiative de la Fondation Ellen MacArthur et du Forum économique mondial. Il rassemble les dirigeants de grands groupes internationaux issus de tous les secteurs avec pour objectif d accélérer la transition circulaire via le soutien à l innovation et la collaboration interindustries. Jean-Louis Chaussade, directeur général de SUEZ, en a été nommé président en janvier dernier. Dans son rapport « Urban biocycles » publié à l occasion du Forum de Davos 2017, le projet MainStream identifie des solutions circulaires pour valoriser les déchets produits par les villes sous la forme d énergie, de nutriments ou de matériaux. Les villes, responsables de 75 % des émissions de gaz à effet de serre, ont encore des progrès à faire. C est l enjeu pointé par le rapport : dans les pays de l OCDE par exemple, seulement 37 % des déchets ménagers produits ont été compostés ou méthanisés. Or la mise en place de système de traitement et de valorisation efficaces a montré qu il était possible d arriver jusqu à 85 %.

The MainStream project was launched at the initiative of the Ellen MacArthur Foundation and the World Economic Forum. It brings together executives from major international groups in all sectors, in an effort to speed up the circular transition by supporting innovation and collaboration between industries. Jean-Louis Chaussade, CEO of SUEZ, was appointed President in January. In its Urban biocycles report, published to coincide with the 2017 Davos Forum, the MainStream project identifies circular solutions for the recovery of the waste produced by towns and cities as energy, nutrients or materials. Towns and cities, which account for 75% of greenhouse gas emissions, still have to make some progress. This is the issue highlighted by the report. For example, in the OECD member countries, only 37% of the household waste produced is composted or converted into methane. The deployment of effective treatment and recovery systems has shown that this figure can reach up to 85%.
