It is the position of the Ellen MacArthur Foundation, one of the first NGOs to promote this model on a worldwide scale. A preference for use over possession and ownership, closer integration of the environment in economic models, information and transparency for consumers, social inclusion thanks to a territorial and local economy: these are just some of the keys to a circular future. A new world stands before us, which is the reason why SUEZ has dedicated the fourth issue of open_resource magazine to the circular economy and the opportunities it offers today and in the future.

The Earth is a spaceship with no reserve fuel tank

Since the start of the industrial age, few economies have escaped from the dominant economic model based on the extract, produce, discard triptych. Japan was one of the first countries to try an alternative way, mainly due to its geographical situation and a shortage of natural resources. At the start of the Meiji period (1870), the country was modernised according to the principles of energy efficiency and the optimisation of the industrial means of production. But this initiative, one of the most advanced
