RESOURCES DIGEST

Whey is the liquid residue, produced by coagulating milk, that is recovered from the fabrication of dairy produce. Often considered to be a bulky and polluting form of waste, whey can now be transformed into a source of energy by methanation. This technique is being developed by Valbio, a high-tech SME specialised in the recovery of agricultural by-products. The process works thanks to fermentation. Bacteria feed on the sugar and the mineral salts in the whey, transforming it into biogas. This biogas is then used to produce heat and electricity. A post- methanation treatment makes sure that the residue produced by the process does not cause any damage to the natural ecosystems.
