Algae for the astronauts on the International Space Station

Depuis mai 2019, les astronautes de la Station spatiale internationale (ISS) expérimentent un « bioréacteur à algues » dont la mission est de leur fournir de l oxygène et de la nourriture. Pour y parvenir, ils ont choisi la Chlorella vulgaris, une espèce d algue connue pour sa forte teneur en protéines. Elle pourrait ainsi constituer près d un tiers du régime alimentaire des astronautes. Un atout non négligeable permettant d embarquer moins de nourriture et de gagner de la place.

Since May 2019, International Space Station (ISS) atsronauts have been experimenting with an algae bioreactor designed to provide oxygen and food. To do so, they chose Chlorella vulgaris, a species of algae known for its high protein content. This could constitute nearly a third of the astronauts diet. A considerable benefit, enabling them to carry less food with them and save space.
