As a pioneer of creating art in nature, NILS-UDO quickly distanced himself from the Land Art movement which, since the late 1960s, also integrates manufactured and sometimes polluting items. The artist, for his part, has chosen to only work with materials he borrows from his environment, such as flower petals, branches, earth and stones. NILS-UDO shares with Land Art the desire to abandon museums to create in-situ work in the heart of landscapes. Land art is not concerned with the vivacity of nature. Its artists are interested in their own work, rather than what surrounds it. What interests me is the fact that things live, grow and die. I am surrounded by nature. I insert myself into it, working to the rhythm of the seasons," he declared in 2003.
