Biodegradability... is a material s capacity to be converted into carbon dioxide (CO2)
through the action of micro-organisms, under the same process occurring in natural waste.
Disintegratability, namely fragmentation and invisibility in the final compost (absence of visual contamination).
Absence of negative effects on the composting process. Almost complete absence of heavy metals and the absence of
negative effects on compost quality
Compostability... is the capacity of an organic material to be transformed into compost
through the composting process. This process exploits the biodegradability of the initial organic materials to transform them into a finished
product called compost. This allows for the waste to add back to the planet rather than detract from it.
For our paper and wood products, it is key that they are compostable, biodegradable
and food safe, without this they are not fulfilling the need to be
environmentally friendly and improve the position from single-
use plastics. We rigorously test our products to make sure they adhere to these requirements.
For paper to be environmentally friendly it needs to adhere to the
Forest Stewardship Council certification, which gives
customers the option to choose forest products like paper and wood that have been
sourced in an environmentally- friendly, socially responsible and economically viable manner. FSC was founded in 1993 in response to concerns about deforestation.
All our wooden stirrers and paper straws have been FSC
sourced.
After months of consultations our range of paper straws have now received EN13432:2000 accreditation. This certification
specifically focuses on compostability, making sure Utopia s non-metallic paper
straws adhere to strict standards concerning biodegrading so they only have a positive impact on
the environment. In other words they actually give something back
to the earth when their useful life is over.
