Registering as a NHR

Recognition of this status is not automatic and requires activation by attending to the

following formalities:

Application for a Portuguese taxpayer number;

Registration as tax resident

Application for the NHR status

Golden Visa Programme In addition to the non-habitual residents tax regime, Portugal has introduced another

scheme whereby non-EU nationals (third-country nationals) can obtain residency rights

and eventually citizenship under the condition that they meet the qualified investment requirements. The aim of the scheme is to attract high net worth individuals who are

willing to invest in Portugal either by purchasing property or creating employment. For

non-EU nationals to qualify for the scheme, they must do at least one of the following:

1. Capital transfer of a minimum of EUR1 million

2. Create a minimum of 10 jobs

3. Acquire real estate assets with a minimum purchase price of EUR500,000,

or EUR350,000 if the property is more than 30 years old or located in an urban

regeneration area

With more than 90% of Golden Visa applications relying on the last investment method,

real estate acquisition is by far the most popular choice.

The Golden Visa is valid for one year and renewable in two-year periods. The scheme

allows for:

1. Visa exemption for entry in Portugal 2. The freedom to live and work in Portugal 3. Visa exemption for travelling within the Schegen Area 4. Family reunification without limitation to the number of family members (including spouses, descendants, or other first level relatives dependent on the Golden Visa holder)

5. Obtaining permanent residence in Portugal after 5 years, under certain conditions 6. Acquiring Portuguese citizenship after 6 years, under certain conditions

According to the scheme, the investor shall maintain the investment for 5 years and

comply with the minimum mandatory periods of stay during this period, which require

the applicant to spend at least 7 days of the first calendar year in Portugal and 14 days of each of the following two years.
