En Grande-Bretagne, plus de 35 espèces d abeilles1 seraient menacées par l agriculture intensive, le changement climatique ou encore l urbanisation croissante. À Bristol, pour contribuer à leur protection, SUEZ UK et des apiculteurs locaux travaillent ensemble à l introduction de ruches au sein de l unité de valorisation énergétique (UVE) de Severnside. Cette UVE est à proximité de l estuaire de la Severn, cadre idéal pour le développement des abeilles.

Un projet similaire mené près de Darwen vise quant à lui à améliorer l habitat des chouettes effraies. Les associations caritatives Men in Sheds et Lancashire Wildlife ont collaboré avec SUEZ UK pour installer des nichoirs sur l un des édifices du centre de recyclage. Cette opération a permis d accueillir trois nouveaux oisillons d effraies.

Ces deux initiatives ont pour objectif d être reproduites dans tout le pays, afin de contribuer à la protection de la biodiversité à l échelle nationale.

In the United Kingdom, more than 35 species of bees1 are thought to be under threat from intensive agriculture, climate change and growing urbanisation. In Bristol, SUEZ UK and local bee-keepers are helping to protect them by installing beehives in the Severnside waste- to-energy recovery centre (SERC). This SERC is close to the Severn estuary, an ideal location for bees to prosper.

Near Darwen, a similar project is hoping to improve the habitat of barn owls. The Men in Sheds and Lancashire Wildlife NGOs worked with SUEZ UK to install nesting boxes on one of the structures in the recycling centre. The operation has seen the arrival of three new barn owl chicks.

These two initiatives will be repeated all over the country, as part of an effort to protect biodiversity on a nationwide scale.
