High Wycombe has a rich history of manufacturing, most notably that of furniture. During the second world war, however, the businesses were called upon for their service and the focus was on a new product.
Workers turned from chairs to the structural components of aircrafts. Designed by Geoffrey de Havilland (who coincidentally was born in High Wycombe) the de Havilland Mosquito was one of the few operational front-line aircrafts of the era whose frame was constructed almost entirely out of wood, gaining the nickname The Wooden Wonder.
Around 5,000 of the total 7,781 de Havilland Mosquitos built had major structural components fabricated from wood in High Wycombe. Fuselages, wings, tailplanes were all crafted by High Wycombe s many furniture businesses.
