Jaguar D-Type Manual 1954 onwards (all models) An insight into the design, engineering, maintenance and operation of Jaguar s Le Mans-winning sports car by Chas Parker

The Jaguar D-Type is the iconic 1950s Jaguar sports racing car that won a hat-trick of Le Mans victories from 1955 to 1957.

Revolutionary at the time, the D-Type had an aluminium monocoque cockpit section, designed to take aerodynamics into account, along with a bag-type fuel tank in the tail. The car also used a dry-sump engine lubrication system, in order to reduce the height of the engine, which in turn reduced the frontal cross-section of the car.

The aerodynamic body made a major contribution to the car s high top speed on the Mulsanne straight at Le Mans 172.8mph in 1955 versus the 160.1mph of its closest rival Ferrari. The Le Mans D-Types featured a distinctive dorsal fin behind the cockpit to improve stability on the Mulsanne straight.

The D-Type first appeared at Le Mans in 1954, and ran competitively, but was hampered by fuel-filter problems, still finishing second behind the winning Ferrari. Works D-Types won at Le Mans in 1955 (driven by the charismatic Mike Hawthorn and Ivor Bueb) and 1956, and after the works Jaguar team withdrew from racing at the end of the 1956 season, 1957 became the D-Type s most successful year, taking five of the top six places at Le Mans in privateer hands.
