Many of the member cruise lines of the Miami-based Florida-Caribbean Cruise Association (FCCA) make regular calls at the award-winning St. Maarten port. These include Carnival Cruise Lines, Royal Caribbean International, Celebrity Cruises, Norwegian Cruise Line, Disney Cruise Lines, Costa Cruise Lines, Cunard Line, and Holland America Line. Others include Princess Cruises, Regent Seven Seas Cruises, Seabourn, and MSC. The ships of these cruise lines are too large to dock at the port in Marigot, even though many of their passengers end up visiting and spending time and money in French St. Martin. The Marigot port can only accommodate small ships due to its shallow waters.
The annual cruise season usually goes from November/ December to March/April, with December/January being the busiest months. In one day in January 2005 for example, a record 9 ships were in port, while Boxing Day was the busiest in 2018 when seven ships brought in some 27,000 cruise passengers to the island. During the winter season, an average of about 5,000 cruise visitors is added daily to the island s population.
