In the same vein, St. Maarten was the first port in the Caribbean to use wind turbines as part of its environmental strategy. Since April 2012, six 4KW vertical axis turbines have been operating at the Harbor. They are linked to the national grid to which surplus energy generated is given back. They are placed in such a way that they do not interfere with the operations of the port. They blend aesthetically with the surroundings and do not make noise that could detract from the experience of the passengers.
