PREPARING FOR CALIBRATION

Calibration sessions can be intimidating if you haven t experienced one before but they needn t be.

Calibration is a vital part of ensuring consistent understanding and application of performance and potential criteria across teams of people who do a similar role. It keeps the Star Review process fair, transparent and prevents people managers scoring their teams too favourably or too harshly. It also allows a final opportunity for other managers to offer positive and developmental feedback to you on your team.

The calibrations session is facilitated by an HRBP and is attended by you and your peers in the same team or department. Each people manager will have a chance to talk about the performance and behaviours of their team members to check that they are correctly applying the performance and potential criteria. Some teams have pre-calibration meetings to discuss the performance of outliers in their teams. This can be helpful but it depends on how you and your peers like to work. The most important thing is to make sure all the people managers are aligned on the collective performance objectives of the department. Ask yourself, would you describe a fully meets performance of your team members in the same way as one of your peers? Do you have the same understanding of your department s key performance indicators?
