in Mexico, SUEZ is building and will operate the biggest desalination plant on the American continent

Faced with water shortage, Mexico is turning to alternative solutions, such as reverse osmosis desalination, to supply water to its fast- growing population.

Against this backdrop, the state of Baja California in Mexico selected SUEZ, NSC Water and NuWater to fund, build and operate the new desalination plant in Playas de Rosarito. SUEZ is building the plant and will then take part in its operation for 37 years.

The first construction phase, due to start in 2018, will enable 190,000 m3 of drinking water to be produced per day by 2020. The second conditional phase will double the capacity of the plant to 380,000 m3 per day by 2024, making it the largest seawater desalination plant on the American continent.

The facility will guarantee drinking water supplies to the coastal region of Baja California, while also establishing an innovative public-private partnership.
