Project
Build two concrete dams, demolish old dams and rebuild the protective stonework and banks of a lock along the Trent-Severn Waterway National Historic Site, as part of Parks Canada s extensive infrastructure improvement program.
Challenges
Work in an active marine environment, close to a residential area and a water treatment plant.
Comply with stringent environmental and naviga- tional constraints in the planning process, including a work area that is restricted by the presence of aquatic plants and animals and a ban on working in the water from March through August.
Solutions
Design and install temporary dams to hold back water and create dry work areas.
Build bridges across the waterway during con- struction, using materials salvaged from other structures.
Use a system where polymer is added to the turbid water and wastewater from excavation and drilling fluids to protect the environment and aquatic life.
Develop a site-specific health and safety program for our 40 workers.
