The robot Spot in Toronto Spot, the Boston Dynamics robot, is now just about everywhere on the planet, including on the worksite of another general contractor in Toronto. Together, we re continuing to test Spot s capabilities and autonomy. Given that all industry players are facing the same technology integration challenges in construction, it made sense for us to share what we learned from using Spot to help transform the industry in Canada.
We were the first in the world to use Spot on a construction site. Its role: to collect various data simultaneously on a worksite using a 3600 camera, a laser scanning camera, artificial intelligence algo- rithms, an air quality sensor, a GPS sensor and an Internet of Things sensor system.
This autonomous mobile robot can get into spaces that are too tight or potentially dangerous for workers.
Smart data collection using Spot and artificial intel- ligence earned us the 2021 Research Award from CanBIM, an organization that encourages innovation in the construction industry.
Technology raises our health and safety bar While unloading a dumpster with a forklift, a weld gave out. Thankfully, no workers were close by.
This type of high-potential near-accident and all types of incidents that could lead to serious injury are recorded using our health and safety mana- gement software and immediately communicated by SMS to our teams across Canada. This internal innovation enables us to take immediate corrective measures on all our worksites in Canada and to prevent these unfortunate situations from occurring elsewhere.
This also makes our site superintendents lives easier. Our health and safety team and our Inno- vation group have developed a digital app and its mobile version. Our superintendents and their teams can now review and analyze the risks associated with each daily task on the worksite.
We also use virtual reality to bring workers into a 3D universe that recreates their work environment so that we can raise their awareness of the risks of fal- ling, and recognize the blind spots of the machinery they operate, among other things.
