Project
Build a 35-wind turbine farm and the supporting infrastruc- ture, including access roads, a sub-station, an electrical collection system for the generated power, high-speed fibre-optic communications lines and meteorological towers, to add 177 megawatts of renewable energy for SaskPower customers enough energy to power more than 87,000 homes.
Challenges
Work in a remote location, 45 minutes away from the closest city.
Build on silty soil and hilly cultivated land, pasture, wetlands and native prairie.
Reduce the impact on the environment, including sensitive landscapes and endangered species and their habitats.
Work at heights on a busy site with up to 200 workers and 80 trucks during peak periods, creating high acci- dent risks.
Solutions
Introduce a 21-7 work schedule consisting of 21 conse- cutive days of work followed by 7 days of rest. Hire and train local labourers.
Anchor the sub-station on piles due to soil conditions.
Find bypass routes to crawl cranes instead of full setup and teardown, as a faster and easier solution and to avoid passing over native grassland prairies. Where bypass routes are impossible, dismantle cranes and reassemble them at the next turbine site.
Have a biologist on site at all times to ensure that an eagle s nest is preserved.
Deliver intensive health and safety training and carry out a daily risk analysis of each task.
