Gros Morne National Park, in Newfoundland and Labrador, is
home to the myotis lucifugus, an endangered bat species in
Canada. The construction of the new visitor centre required
adaptation measures to preserve the popular roosting site
of these little brown bats.
We developed elevated permanent bat condos before the
building was demolished to relocate the individuals and
provide them with a new permanent roosting place. The
siding of the old visitor’s centre was added to the bat condos
to provide tactical familiarity.
Throughout the construction process, we reduced the noise
level by integrating scheduling changes to avoid disrupting
the bats during their roosting period. Most of the heavy
machine work near the roosts was done before or after the
hibernation period
These preventive measures made it possible to preserve
this species habitat and limited humanbat contact There
has been no interaction since the start of the work
Our team on the ground knew that the wellbeing and
conservation of this engendered species was imperative
for Gros Morne
