RISTING GLACIER, SOUTH GEORGIA NO.1 I saw this iceberg in Whale Bay, a shallow bay that icebergs are dragged into by the ocean s current. They scrape against the sea floor and become grounded, remaining there until they have completely melted. During their lifespan in the bay the icebergs are sculpted by the wind and water into unimaginable shapes. Bays that enclose grounded icebergs like these are called iceberg graveyards , a gloomy, yet fitting title that expresses the reverence, silence, and sacredness of this landscape.
