Our spirit of collaboration with Indigenous Nations, Inuit, and Métis Peoples ties into SDG number 10, which as- pires to reduce inequalities within and across countries.
We are aligned with SDG number 17 through all the partnerships we create to advance our vision of a sus- tainable future in construction, including with indige- nous peoples.
Make Indigenous peoples our business partners Indigenous peoples have faced and continue to face significant socio-economic challenges and issues that hinder their individual and collective development.
At Pomerleau, we recognize that all civil society organizations and businesses have a shared responsibility to help improve the living conditions of Canada s Indigenous peoples.
We have always sought to collaborate with Indigenous communities and to foster harmonious, mutually beneficial relationships. For more than a decade, we have carried out approximately 25 construction projects located within Indigenous communities or in collaboration with Indigenous communities.
Pomerleau recognizes the importance of respecting both the history of First Nations, Métis, and Inuit peoples, and recognizes the current context. We therefore strive to respect the legal rights of Indigenous communities across the country, and to preserve their beliefs, cultures, traditions, heritage, and territories in all projects we undertake.
We need to strike the right balance between the importance of taking action now through shorter-term measures, and the need to develop lasting and meaningful business partnerships. We are convinced that the economic growth of Indigenous peoples has beneficial effects not only for their communities, but also for Canada as a whole.
Indigenous peoples make up 5% of the total Canadian population, but consistently receive a lower percentage of supply contracts. 7
Indigenous Peoples Relations Strategy
In 2021, we adopted an Indigenous relations strategy that revolves around the key goal of adopting an engagement policy and a concrete action plan that maximize Indigenous participation in the work to be done on our projects, and to be more intentional, respectful, and responsive in all our business relationships with Indi- genous peoples.
