Introduire un soupçon de circularité dans nos pratiques habituelles ne suffira probablement pas si nous voulons, sur le long terme, que les individus changent radicalement leur mode de vie. Car le danger sera finalement que la circularité crée un sentiment artificiel d abondance et ainsi aboutisse aux mêmes conséquences sociales et environnementales que celles qui sont dénoncées aujourd hui.

Un deuxième risque, lié au premier, tient au fait que philosophiquement la circularité s oppose aux structures mentales occidentales. En Amérique ou en Europe, nous connaissons un rapport au temps et au développement linéaire. En Orient au contraire, il est cyclique, une perspective que l on retrouve notamment dans la croyance en la réincarnation. Ces différences philosophiques sont fondamentales dans notre appréhension du progrès. Il y a en Occident une tendance à vouloir « toujours plus ». Qui imagine que l iPhone 8 ait moins de fonctionnalités que l iPhone 7 ?

L avènement de l économie circulaire passera par un changement complet de paradigme.

Nous vivons dans des écosystèmes où tout est lié, exactement comme dans la nature. Il faut donc s inspirer de la manière dont celle-ci fonctionne pour comprendre à quel point nos vieux modèles économiques autocentrés sont devenus inopérants. Observons un arbre dans une forêt, son écosystème naturel : il produit au quotidien plus de vingt externalités positives au bénéfice des espèces vivantes qui l entourent. Vingt services, en quelque sorte, et tout cela gratuitement !

Transposons ce raisonnement au monde de l entreprise et interrogeons-nous : « Quels sont les vingt services que mon entreprise va apporter aujourd hui gratuitement aux autres entreprises,

The threats to the development of the circular economy

There are two main threats. The first is its very name. Introducing a hint of circularity into our usual practices will probably not be enough, if we really want individuals to change the way they consume in the long term. There is a danger that circularity creates an artificial feeling of fullness and therefore provokes the same social and environmental consequences as those that are criticised today.

The second risk is related to the first one. Philosophically, circularity is in opposition to the mental structures in the West. In America and Europe, we relate to the passing of time and linear development. But in the East, this relationship is cyclical, as testified by the belief in reincarnation. These philosophical differences are fundamental to our understanding of progress. In the West, we tend to yearn for more and more . Can you imagine an iPhone 8 with less functionality than the iPhone 7?
