Cultural Safety Moments: Building
bridges through learning
How do you create fertile ground for strong relationships?
By taking down barriers. Our head of Indigenous relations in
Vancouver implemented an awareness program comprised
of capsules exploring Indigenous cultures, challenges and
success stories in communities, and as truth and reconci-
liation measures—a format inspired by the health and safety
discussions held at our worksites before every work shift. Our
objective: to develop 24 themes that will be rolled out across
the country in 2025. We’ve already created 12 and facilitated
10 sessions for our teams in Vancouver and Montreal, as well
as during client presentations.
These opportunities for dialogue are not just a formality. They
genuinely transform our collective understanding of Indige-
nous realities and lay the groundwork for more meaningful
collaborations.
Our Flagship Achievements
INDIGENOUS RELATIONS
Province House and Daniel-J.-McDonald:
Two approaches, one vision
In Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island, we’ve taken up a chal-
lenge head on: how to ensure Indigenous participation in two
neighbouring projects without creating competition for the
same already limited businesses and talent.
Our solution: to adapt to local realities. To renovate the
Daniel-J.-McDonald Building, the head off ice of Veteran Affairs
Canada, we took a conventional approach that generated $1.5
million in Indigenous procurement. For the restoration of the
historic Province House, we chose an innovative approach
by investing directly in two Mi'kmaq communities in Prince
Edward Island: we f inanced the roof repair for a school in Len-
nox Island First Nation and created two positions for economic
development coordinators in Abegweit First Nation. This was
a $1.3-million investment in supporting local communities—
a commitment that we’re very excited about.
We also recruited an Indigenous worker for each of our project
teams. This customized approach proves that by adapting to
local realities, we can make a lasting difference.
Joint venture with the Cree Nation of Mistissini:
A f irst initiative that will pave the way
Nicolas Sharp, Project Manager, talks to us about the Chino joint venture
for a new construction in Mistissini.
