Award-winning
circularity initiatives
Recovery
of granular material
→ Green value chain → Circular economy
The consortium Nouvel Horizon St-Laurent (NHSL), of which
we are a member, won the Prix Génie-voirie en développement
durable from the Association des constructeurs de routes et
grands travaux du Québec (ACRGTQ) and Constructo.
This award highlighted the recovery of materials during the decons-
truction of the original Champlain Bridge and the project’s exem-
plary environmental management. This recognition pays tribute
to excellence in innovative practices in environmental protection
and the conservation of natural resources in a context of sustai-
nable development.
This was a unique project in Quebec, and one which will set the
standard in Canada in terms of infrastructure deconstruction. All
the steel was recovered, along with 95% of the concrete mass
and 90% of the total mass of materials generated by the work,
including site waste. We thank The Jacques Cartier and Champlain
Bridges Incorporated for their vision.
The Promenade Samuel-De Champlain in Quebec City, a pro-
ject to completely transform the existing space into a vast
multifunctional area, was originally going to import f inishing
sand and coarse sand to create a beach. This involved
accessing excess materials off-site and transporting sand
over a large distance. A material similar to f inishing sand
from excavation work in an adjacent sector was tested and
then reused to create the beach. This is an example of how
circularity can sometimes be very simple and how a little
adaptability can lead to an optimal solution.
The deconstruction of the original Champlain Bridge
shows the industry that it’s possible, with a shared vision
and sustained effort, to integrate high-level objectives in
materials recovery, and to position ourselves as an agent
of change by promoting sustainable development.
