bremenports asked Bachelor -
students of Jade University of Applied
Sciences in Elsfleth to develop
business cases both for long - distance
inland shipping and urban waterway
logistics .
Over one semester students , which
major in maritime management ,
played the role of innovative IWT -
investors to formulate and calculate
relevant business models . We
provided the students with sketchy
requirements only to maximise
creativity :
− Identify a potential transport
chain in one of the given market
segments that makes use of
inland shipping ;
− Quantify the business case using a
spreadsheet model ;
− Validate the business case with a
representative of the industry , and
− Documentthe caseusing aBMC .
The Business Cases
Long - distance : An IWT - based
hub - and - spoke network ,
dubbed “ River Cargo Line ” ,
connecting North Germany
ports via canals and River
Rhine to the industrial heart
of Germany with 86m - self
propelled barges .
Urban Waterway Logistics : A
distribution network for a
beverage wholesaler into the
City of Bremen via the River
Weser to avoid congestion
on urban trunk roads using
ZULU - type of vessels .

The training put us into a
challenging real - life situation
to formulate , validate and
document a business case .
More importantly , the case
had to be justified to the
project sponsors
