What Would We Miss If There Is No Inland
Shipping ?
InnoWaTr is in existence , because the project partners
feel that the uptake of inland shipping along
waterways is below its potential . Although ships are
considered to be environmentally friendly , there is
plenty of capacity on rivers and canals : inland
waterway transport accounts for only 4 % of the total
transport volume in the hinterland of Bremen ' s ports .
Nationwide , the modal share of this mode of
transport is 7 % , compared to 14 % 25 years ago .
We want to achieve a higher uptake of inland
shipping , but it seems all logistics arguments in favour
of it are to no avail , regardless of how often we
repeat them . It seems new perspectives are needed ,
but it is not a marketing exercise . It seems we need to
dig deeper and question the role of inland shipping in
our socio - economic system .
bremenports asked students of the Bachelor - course
“ Integrated Design ” of University of the Arts Bremen to
develop artistic positions on the question of What
Would We Miss If There Is No Inland Shipping ? The
resulting exhibition is part of the EU project InnoWaTr ,
in which various student groups are openly and
speculatively reflecting on the role and potential of
inland waterway transport
Consequently the event took place on board MV
Dauerwelle the dedicated exhibition vessel of the
university The CoE features exclusively the results of
this conversation at the end of each chapter
