The Belgium Freight Flow Coalitions ( FFC 5 / 6 / 7 ) are pilot projects

aimed at improving sustainable urban freight distribution in Ghent by

shifting transport from road to inland waterways . The three pilot flows

focus on construction materials , waste logistics , and agrologistics ,

demonstrating that inland waterway transport ( IWT ) can be an

efficient , low - emission alternative for urban freight . By combining

resources and experiences , the coalitions aim to enhance vessel

capacity and present a unified approach to policymakers and

stakeholders , ultimately bridging the cost gap between traditional

road transport and waterborne solutions .

Information :

The objectives are to reduce traffic congestion , air pollution , and

carbon emissions in Ghent by promoting these alternative freight

solutions . The tests will occur along waterways in and around Ghent ,

evaluating costs and emissions to showcase the advantages of IWT .
