FFC3 , Urban IWT Retail Shuttle Hamburg aims to tackle the
challenge of reducing road traffic congestion and emissions in
Hamburg while ensuring efficient commercial transport . The pilot
project seeks to explore the potential of inland waterway
transport ( IWT ) as a sustainable alternative to road - based freight
in urban areas , particularly in the HafenCity district and along the
Alster lake and its canals .

The objectives of the pilot include assessing the feasibility and
scalability of IWT for urban logistics by testing the movement of
retail goods under real operational conditions . This involves
quantifying and comparing costs and emissions to demonstrate
the benefits of waterborne transport .
