How to Accelerate Market Take - up of IWT ?
The proto - typing of InnoWaTr ´ s Freight Flow
Coalitions resulted in eight clear
recommendations for public institutions dealing
with IWT , and the private ( logistics ) sector .
Researchers of the Hapag - Lloyd Centre for
Shipping and Global Logistics ( CSGL ) at Kühne
Logistics University , one of InnoWaTr ´ s resource
partners , identified drivers and barriers of each
FFC to conclude important endorsements for
accelerated market take - up of IWT .
Public policy - makers are advised to eliminate cost
disadvantages of IWT , address infrastructure
insufficiencies , harmonise cross - border regulations
and promote IWT as an attractive employer .
CSGL ´ s researchers recommend to logistics
service providers to deepen their integration with
shippers and other relevant stakeholders along
IWT transport chains . They point to a need to be
less reluctant to share operational data of freight
flows in order to facilitate closer collaboration .
In this collaboration , CSGL singled out sharing
detailed information about cost , investments ,
operations , and emissions reduction a key factor
in attracting the awareness of the shipper and
starting a major shift from road to waterways .
Private sector stakeholders of IWT are also advised
to embrace digital and automation technologies ,
as well as to actively contribute to staff
development towards attractive job profiles in
IWT .
Recommendations for public and private IWT - stakeholders
• Facilitate a progressive regulatory
environment for IWT
• Create awareness for IWT
• Support career development for
IWT .
• Maintain und upgrade , where
needed , IWT infrastructures
• Collaborate with stakeholders
• Share data on freight flow - relevant
key metrics
• Embrace new technologies
• Promote a skilled workforce
