Effective regulation can facilitate the

growth of IWT , making it a viable and

sustainable mode of transportation in

the broader logistics landscape .

Inland water transportation can play a significant role in the overall transport

infrastructure of a country . The regulative role in this sector encompasses

various aspects , including safety , environmental protection , economic

efficiency , and the promotion of multimodal transport systems . Here are

some key points regarding the regulative role in inland water transportation

one should be aware of :

• Regulatory framework for the use of alternative fuels in inland

navigation

• Regulatory framework for autonomous inland navigation

• Tax and financial measures to promote modal shift and the

greening of the river fleet

• Creation of a regulatory framework favorable to urban river

logistics

The EU and the CCNR allow project leaders to obtain exemptions from existing

regulations ( ES - TRIN , RVR , RVIR ) to facilitate experiments with alternative fuels

( hydrogen , methanol , batteries , etc . ) or remote - controlled navigation . These

experiments are beginning to bear fruit and provide feedback . This will allow

progress to be made in the development of a regulatory framework favorable

to the decarbonization and automation of inland navigation .
