Collecting and sorting of waste are essential components of
successful circular logistics . Municipalities collect waste direct
from the kerbstone or provide local reception facilities . In Ghent
the idea is to put such a facility on water . . A barge serves as a
floating area both to hold appropriate bins for collection and to
move the trash for further sorting out of the city – all on the
waterway !
At a hub , immediately after the barges arrive , bins get unloaded
and emptied , the waste arranged for on - ward transportation and
processing . A complementary project even considers using inland
vessels for this .

The future
This arrangement
allows not only for
efficient waste
logistics , but also for
mobile recycling
facilities to be
opened , for
example for street
festivals or other
large - scale public
events .
