A collaborative approach unites all stakeholders from national
authority to final customer along three supply chains of
beverages , cardboard / paper waste and building materials
( wood ) .
• For distributing beverages , the partners teamed up with
OBD , an independent leader in beverage distribution for
cafés , hotels and restaurants . Test included shipments of
up to 40 to 50 pallets a week allocated to two weekly
sailings . Delivery trucks cover the last - mile .
• Cardboard waste on a similar itinerary amounted to 12
dump containers a week . Centred around the port of
Austerlitz , paper and cardboard waste , packaged in
bales and pressed on the spot are cleared out of the
city by waterway to recycling centers . Partners estimate
a potential of c . 100 bales per week .
• In a third use case , the Seine axis is to supply construction
sites along the river using innovative container racks that
hold multiple unit loads of various sizes and shapes .
The French FFC tests customers ’ urban cargo flows in real - life
conditions using innovative barges of ZULU - type with a length of
approx . 50 m . To ease handling they are equipped with onboard
cranes .
The ZULU 06 is world ’ s first hydrogen - powered cargo vessel . An
electric engine powered by a hydrogen fuel cell which is
coupled to a battery pack limits greenhouse gas emissions during
navigation to zero . Half of the hydrogen comes from renewable
electricity the other is made using the French electricity mix
which being mostly nuclear has low emissions Other ZULUs run
on hydrated vegetable oil HVO allowing for important
comparisons between this fuel type and hydrogen VNF is
monitoring the CO2 reduction potential of these vessels
underpinning the greening efforts of the FFC
In Paris , along the River Seine ZULU barges trade
between Gennevilliers Inland Port and urban wharfs in
the heart of the city .
